DNA Relationship Testing

Relationship Testing assesses if two or more people share a biological relation. Relationship Testing is slightly more complex than paternity testing and can be used in the following ways:

SIBLINGS TEST: When the issue of siblingship is in question, the recommended method to determine whether individuals are true biological siblings is to test their parents. DNA paternity and maternity testing will provide conclusive results. However, in situations where the alleged parents are unavailable for testing, a DNA siblingship test can be performed to analyse the relationship of biological siblings.

easyDNA can confirm if two people are related by sharing one or both parents, meaning that they are either full or half siblings. Samples are collected in the same way as a paternity test and results are available within 5-7 working days from receipt of samples. The Sibling DNA test is priced from CHF489.

AUNT/UNCLE DNA TEST : Avuncular testing assesses whether an individual is the Aunt or Uncle of another person. This type of case if often used when the alleged parent of the person is deceased and a brother or sister of the alleged parent is still living. Avuncular testing is priced from CHF489.

GRANDPARENTAGE DNA TEST : In situations where the alleged father is unavailable for testing such as he is deceased or unwilling to participate, the alleged father's parents can be tested to determine whether they are the true biological grandparents of the child. When conducting a grandparentage test, it is recommended to test both grandparents (the grandmother and the grandfather) in order to obtain the most conclusive results. If this is not possible, a grandparentage test can be conducted by testing only one grandparent.

Results are available in 5-7 working days from receipt of samples at the laboratory. One or both Grandparents can take part in the test as well as a common parent, such as the Mother of the Grandchild. The Grandparentage test is priced from CHF489.

Relationship Tests are commonly ordered by individuals who need to know whether or not they are biologically related; possibly for legal or immigration purposes, for peace of mind or simply out of curiosity. Reasons for taking the test include: resolving questions of custody or child support; confirming the authenticity of a family tree; reuniting branches of a family that may have lost contact; assessing biological relationships in cases of adoption; or helping to confirm relationship of a child conceived through alternative reproduction technologies.

Relationship testing varies greatly on a case to case basis.

easyDNA treats each case individually and we will advise the client on the optimum testing strategy for their particular situation.

There are several options of genetic testing used in Relationship Testing and these include the following:

DNA Profiling, which allows the genetic profiles of two or more individuals to be compared so that their probability of biological relatedness may be calculated.

Y Chromosome Analysis (YSTR), which assists in determination of the biological relationship between males through their direct paternal lineage.

X-Chromosome Testing (X-Test), which assists in the determination of female siblings and an alleged father

With easyDNA, the samples are analysed with state-of-the-art genetic identification systems. Depending on the complexity of the case, results are normally available within 5-7working days after the samples arrive at our lab. The test report is sent only to the designated individuals to ensure that the case is treated in strictest confidence.

Unlike a DNA paternity test which will always provide a conclusive result, relationship tests are different. When such a test is conducted, the laboratory will determine the genetic profile of the alleged relatives based on the type of genetic material exhibited by each person, a relationship index is determined. If the index is less than 1.00, this indicates non-relatedness. If the index is greater than 1.00, this indicates that the 2 tested individuals are more likely to be true biological relatives. The higher the value of the index, the greater the likelihood the 2 individuals are true biological relatives. Although the test may not always provide you with a conclusive answer, it may be able to provide you with an indication of whether you are more likely to be or not to be the true biological relative of the other tested individual.
